Scientist that doesn’t exist, writes about global warming

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

He can’t exist if he doesn’t use An Inconvenient Truth as his bible…can he?  Yet, Dr. Roy Spencer, Ph.D., Climatologist, Chief Research Scientist at UAH, former senior scientist for climate studies at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, winner of the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, and winner of the American Meteorological Society Special Award—is actually a real person.  His AMS award was given for “developing a global, precise record of earth’s temperature from operational polar-orbiting satellites, fundamentally advancing our ability to monitor climate”—what does he possibly know about the climate?

In a recent column for Fusion Magazine, I talked about the media’s shock when they found out that Glenn had a scientific basis for his skepticism on global warming. It wasn’t just Glenn saying “that flat earth can’t get ‘um warmer! Pass ‘em thuh gritz!”

If you’re looking for a quick read on some of the science behind global warming skepticism from a real scientist, Dr. Spencer has posted a great primer on his blog which includes this interesting tidbit:

12) Why Do Most Scientists Believe CO2 is Responsible for the Warming? Because (as they have told me) they can’t think of anything else that might have caused it. Significantly, it’s not that there is evidence nature can’t be the cause, but a lack of sufficiently accurate measurements to determine if nature is the cause. This is a hugely important distinction, and one the public and policymakers have been misled on by the IPCC.

The whole thing is worth a read—as is his most recent book.

Check it out you wacky right-wing deniers.

Video: The fusion of entertainment and enlightenment

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

A couple of video treats from yesterday via TheRightScoop that show just a bit of range for Glenn.  First of all, you have the relentless mocking of Keith Olbermann (of all of the days for me to be stuck working on other things out of the studio*).   Then, on the same day, 17 in-depth minutes* on the Financial Reform bill.

Love him or hate him, I don’t know of any other host in America who is pulling off both of these segments–especially within in the same 24 hour period.

*Thankfully Glenn realized during the Olbermann rant that he is no longer clear to make fun of other people for long monologues.

Little Blog Entry Graduates to Fusion

Friday, July 9th, 2010

After wasting far too much time this week on my promised critique from the Beck bashing Weekly Standard column—I was faced with a deadline…I had a Fusion column due. Which…I hadn’t started.

It made sense to me (because I’m lazy) to just substitute the Standard analysis for my monthly column…but…it was far too long. There was a lot to relentlessly ridicule in the article. So, I went to the editor of Fusion, Liz Julis, and made the case that it was “important” to get extra space because of the “republic” (or something), and she agreed (even though she didn’t believe me at all.)

So, I’m proud to announce my little idea for a blog entry has graduated to Fusion magazine. You can subscribe to Fusion here, and enjoy the capitalistic justice that results:

One conservative magazine takes unfair shots at Glenn -> New subscriptions to much better conservative magazine owned by Glenn.

Ahhh…the symmetry.
